Spot Cleaning Carpets

Use a solution of one part water to one part white vinegar, or GNLD’s Super 10, with a 1:10 dilution (or for greasy stains GNLD’s LDC in a 1:5 dilution). Vinegar is particularly good and recommended for Wool Carpets, because of its acid ph. Wet the spot slightly (never over wet the carpet or the underfelt below will rot) in circular motions working inwards GENTLY rub the carpet pile, (do not rub hard or scrub this will damage the pile of the carpet). Gently Rinse off the cleaning solution with a little water on a sponge.

Stubborn Stain Spot Cleaning

If the stain is stubborn use Benzene neat, and use method above.

Polypropylene Carpets (the easiest to clean)

On Polypropylene Carpets ONLY, you can use Jik and water, diluted 1:1. Please note if you do not rinse off the soapy residue your carpet will keep soiling in the same spot because of dirt sticking to the soapy residue. Do NOT overwet the carpet & rot the underfelt.

Removing Wax from Carpets

Exactly the same as removing wax from any fabric – iron over the wax with brown paper between the iron and the wax. The wax will melt and be absorbed into the brown paper.

Animal Soiling on Carpets

If you have dog or cat urine on your carpets and the smell does not go away after removing the spots with the method above, you may need the have the carpet uplifted and the underfelt replaced, otherwise it will keep smelling and rising to the surface every time the carpets are steamcleaned.

Vacuuming Carpets

High Traffic areas should be vacuumed 3 times a week, extremely high traffic with loose soiling should be vacuumed daily. The loose soil particles will cut the carpet fibres and damage the pile over time. Clean walk off mats at doorways from outside and the kitchen help to minimize soil & grease respectively, on your carpets.

Steamcleaning (Hot Water Injection and Extraction) and Dry Foam Cleaning

Most carpets (unless they have very little traffic) should be cleaned thoroughly at least once a year. When choosing a steamcleaning company be careful to use a reputable steamcleaner who will not overwet your carpets or use inferior chemicals that will leave a soapy residue and resoil quickly. Dry foam cleaning is another option, but it is a comparatively superficial clean, so will not be suitable for heavily soiled carpets.
